The NFL just changed its rules, and the kickoff will look slightly different this year than in the past.
The Chiefs, well, let's say they did not favor the rule change. We heard Andy Reid voice his opinion on the situation a few weeks ago, and now special teams coordinator Dave Toub has expressed the same.
The rule change states that kickoffs that are fair-caught anywhere behind the 25-yard line will be brought to the 25-yard line. This takes away all of the strategic things you can do, but the rule is supposed to help protect the players slightly more.
But, there is another thing the NFL considered when considering the rule change. The XFL, the developmental style spring league, has a rule they use during kickoffs.
Per ESPN, The kicker lines up at his 30-yard line, with the other ten members of the kickoff team lining up at the opponent's 35 — 5 yards away from the returning team. Only the kicker and one returner can move until the ball is fielded. Touchbacks are spotted at the 35-yard line.
"Yeah, we did. We looked at that," Toub told the media on Thursday. "We looked at tape, you know, on the up in NFL films in Jersey; we watched it. It's something that we could possibly go through someday. I mean, that could be the next step. Who knows? But it is something that I like it because there's more return. There are returns, and they put the ball back at the 30-year, kicking off in the 30, and I love it because there are more returns."
That would be interesting, and it seems like they would consider it again in the future.
