The Kansas City Chiefs' star defensive tackle is looking for a contract extension, and the latest news may suggest one is coming soon.

I'm sure for many of us, the Chris Jones extension saga has been going on for too long. By now, most of us would have hoped that the Chiefs would have given him the deal already, but there seem to be roadblocks.

I don't know exactly what's going on between the two sides, but I'm willing to bet that Jones' camp is waiting to see what New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams will get so they know what range to expect a contract in.

Jones is better than Williams and almost as good as Aaron Donald, even though this last season had Jones being the better of the two. You can't blame him because he deserves to be a top-three highest-paid defensive tackle.

Recently, we got an extensive update on the contract situation from ESPN insider Jeff Darlington.

"The Chiefs would like to give him that long-term extension," Darlington said. "I'm told that they are still optimistic that this will get done — likely before training camp — for Chris Jones. And this is significant for a number of reasons, not just the contract itself. The Chiefs right now are just barely below the salary cap, one of the highest salary caps right now in the league. If they can do that deal with Jones, they can ultimately bring his number down."

Sooner is better than later. The sooner the Chiefs give him an extension, the sooner they can clear some cap space to make a few more free-agency moves if they want to. The longer they wait, it's likely the more they will have to pay. For Jones, that's good; for the Chiefs' maybe not so much.

Keep an eye out for the Jones news sometime soon.
