The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has been the talk of a lot of contract stuff going on around the league.
It seems like all of the super young quarterbacks that are really good are now getting paid. Lamar Jackson is now the highest-paid player in the league per annual salary. Jalen Hurts was just before that, and now Burrow is going to get a deal too.
When Mahomes signed his deal, he was the highest-paid player when factoring in total money, not annual salary. He has since paid on his deal for two years now, so some people think his contract should be adjusted a bit.
Mahomes isn't worried.
"I've always said I worry about legacy and winning rings more than making money at this moment," he told reporters. "We see what's going on around the league, but at the same time, I'll never do anything that's going to hurt us from keeping the great players around me. So it's kind of teetering around that line."
But should the best player be the guy that gets paid the most? Not really. This happens every year. Guys set new records for deals almost every year because the league changes and the money changes.
But it's not really about the money. I mean, sure, that's a huge part, but that's not the only thing that matters.
"It's not about being the highest-paid guy; it's not about making a ton of money. I've made enough money that I'll be set for the rest of my life. But at the same time, you got to find that line where you're making a good amount of money but you're still keeping a lot of great players around you so you can win these Super Bowls and you're able to compete in these games.
"If you look at the greats in the league, they find that right spot where they're getting paid a lot of money but at the same time keeping a lot of these great players around. … I understand you look at the team and you've got guys like Chris [Jones] and [L'Jarius] Sneed and even Travis [Kelce] — all these guys that you need to keep around you to have these great teams. But at the same time, you want to make sure you're taking care of yourself."
Tom Brady, the greatest football player of all time by many, was one of those guys Mahomes is referring to. He consistently took pay cuts so the team could have more money to work with in free agency and other areas.
I'm not saying that's what Mahomes should do, but there is one thing he said that stood out to me the most. He said that he has made enough money for him to always be well off, paraphrased of course. So, I would say I don't think he will be getting a deal anytime soon.
