This season has had an MVP feel to it for Patrick Mahomes as he has dominated in every game he has played. His play is a huge reason the Kansas City Chiefs are 10-3. In fact, for most of the season, he has been the MVP favorite.
That may have changed on Sunday, though.
Mahomes and the Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos, but barely. At one point, Kansas City was up 27-0. Then, Denver scored 21 straight, and suddenly, the Chiefs started to choke it seemed.
We know that these games, regardless of records, will always be a battle, and on Sunday it was. The Broncos have been terrible all year long, at least on offense. Their defense has been great, and we saw that Sunday.
On paper, it may look like Mahomes didn't have an MVP type of game. The three interceptions may kill his case for the award, and it doesn't help that Eagles' quarterback Jalen Hurts had a great game against the Giants on Sunday.
In a way, though, head coach Andy Reid just campaigned for Mahomes to stay in the race.
"Listen, and this is hard to say, but, if you take out the three interceptions, he really had a heck of a game, from my eyes. I mean, you can't do, you can't obviously have the three. So, that's where I'm at (with how Mahomes played)," Reid told the media when asked his opinion on Mahomes' play.
Mahomes may have had three interceptions, but he really didn't have a terrible game. If you watched, you saw him countlessly escape pressure and make a play out of nothing over and over again.
This Broncos unit is a top-three defense in the league, and most teams know that. So, yes, Mahomes had three turnovers, two of which led to points, but he was still dicing up a very good defense.
No, he didn't have a better game than the other guy competing for the award in Jalen Hurts, but he still didn't play terribly.
Mahomes finished 28/42 and 352 passing yards with three touchdowns. That is not a bad game, at all. Hopefully, the three interceptions don't completely take Mahomes out of the conversation, because his play has been great all year.
