The Kansas City Chiefs have had something that no other team maybe in the history of the NFL has had, and one star breaks down why it works so well.
The Chiefs have, historically, one of the greatest offenses of all time. Having Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid is a huge reason why, but let's not discredit the fact that they have something that no other team in NFL history has. There may be a few teams, but I'm willing to bet it isn't better than what the Chiefs have.
Every team that is historically good has personalities and certain players that just gel well together. For the Chiefs, it's Mahomes and Kelce, which is the best offensive duo in the league. They are one of, if not the best offensive duo of all time. There has never been a quarterback-receiver or tight-end duo as lethal as this one when you talk about knowing what the other player will do.
The Chiefs show that every game, and everyone always wonders how is it that even when Mahomes loses all his receivers, how do he and Kelce still connect for these huge plays. Well, Kelce finally broke it down a little bit and let everyone know what one huge part of it is.
"You don't develop these kinds of things without being in practice, going full speed every single rep in the offseason and training camps because you know that those are all instincts that you build for in-game decisions," Kelce told former Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith. "And, I feel like the one thing that Pat does naturally better than any quarterback or any player I've ever been around, is improvise when the play shuts down. His ability to get out of the pocket, still be able to throw it anywhere on the field, as far as he needs to throw it, as short as he needs to throw it, and just being able to get it in somebody's hands.
"When I saw that he has that ability now it's, you get more excited when the first play breaks down. They glove us on the first play, they just have our card, they got the right defense for the right coverage and now it's even more fun because when Pat gets out of the pocket, guys tend to move more. It starts to become more of a broken-down play. The coverage just doesn't stay the same, the voids start to open up in other areas and, it's just backyard ball just to go to the open spot and let Pat kind of throw you open."
It makes things even better when you realize that in this interview Kelce is talking to his former quarterback Alex Smith. He and Smith were a great combo, but they weren't like this. They were never one of the best duo's in the league. Smith was a guy that was consistent, and you could always count on him.
But for Mahomes and Kelce, this is a duo that is up there with Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, and Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. Some would say this duo is better, and it's because of their ability to improvise as Kelce said. Those other two duos I named didn't do that because those quarterbacks weren't mobile, at all.
These two are two of the greatest to ever do it at their position, and with the way they are playing, they have a chance to make themselves the best at their position of all time, and Kelce is practically already there.
