The Dallas Cowboys are expected to adopt a "run the damn ball" mindset into the 2025 NFL season under the reign of Brian Schottenheimer as head coach. The plan is obvious as Schotty has consistently spoken about it and his recent hires suggest that'll be the emphasis.

To do so, they've hired Klayton Adams as offensive coordinator, who coached the offensive line of the Arizona Cardinals, who used plenty of gap scheme concepts, majoring in counter, and ranking among the top rushing offenses in the league.

Whoever winds up as offensive line coach in Dallas, it'll likely have to be someone familiar with what Adams and Schottenheimer will demand from the Cowboys O-line. But the next step is to naturally hire the right OL and RB coaches. The latter could come in the next few hours, per Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS, who reported Sunday afternoon the team's decision could come in the next 24 to 36 hours.

Top 3 candidates for Cowboys RB coach:

Getting the hire right will be very important for a coaching staff that appears to be hellbent on emphasizing the run game. Based on various reports, these are the three names known to be in the mix for the position:

  • Tashard Choice, Texas Longhorns RB coach
  • Ra’Shaad Samples, Oregon Ducks RB coach
  • Derrick Foster, New Orleans Saints RB coach

According to Hill from All City DLLS, the Cowboys "are choosing between Tashard Choice and Derrick Foster for running backs coach." Oregon's Ra'Shaad Samples appears to be out of the running based on the report.

Keep in mind, as A to Z Sports noted in an earlier post, Choice is making $700,000 as running backs coach for Texas, which likely means he'd be taking a pay cut to head to Dallas. Foster, who coaches running backs for the Saints, could be considered the likeliest candidate financially speaking. As New Orleans waits for Kellen Moore's Super Bowl run to end, Saints coaches have been allowed to interview with other teams.

Though Scottie Montgomery, RBs coach for the Detroit Lions, was interviewed for the offensive coordinator position, NFL rules prohibit teams to poach coaches from another staff unless it's for a promotion. He seems to not be in the mix for the RB position gig.
