Recent coaching intel could eliminate one name from the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator search
This Dallas Cowboys DC candidate may end up heading to a division rival based on the latest intel around the NFL.
The Dallas Cowboys are casting a wide net on their search for defensive coordinator with their interview list up to nine candidates so far. But one of them may be about to be scratched off the list by a division rival.
With the New York Giants aiming to finalize a deal that will make John Harbaugh their next head coach, there’s an expectation that he will bring in coaches from his staff with the Baltimore Ravens to the NFC East. One of them is on the Cowboys’ list of interviews for their DC opening.
Zach Orr may be removed from candidates by Giants
According to NFL insider Jonathan Jones from CBS, “there’s an expectation Harbaugh will wish to bring a good amount of his coaches from Baltimore to the Giants.” Earlier in the day, Ian Rapoport from NFL Network reported offensive coordinator Todd Monken is expected to join Harbaugh in New York.
The question is if Harbaugh will do the same with Orr. Though the sentiment around the NFL is that the Ravens defense regressed since Orr took over as defensive coordinator in 2024, the truth is he dealt with plenty of injuries to his unit. The Ravens went from being the 11th ranked defense per EPA per play to 18th, via RBSDM.
And yet, over the last two years, the Ravens have been a Top 3 rushing defense per the same metric.
However, assuming Orr will definitely land in Baltimore is premature. After spending 18 years with the Ravens, Harbaugh has other former assistants he may prefer. Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, for instance, is likely going to be available once Tennessee hires a new head coach. The same goes for Anthony Weaver at Miami.
Orr fits the theme of Cowboys DC search
Though he’s not considered the favorite for the gig, at 33 years old, Orr fits the Cowboys seeming emphasis on young coaches. Out of nine known candidates, nine are under 50 years old and three are in their thirties. Orr is the youngest candidate on the list.
The Cowboys appear to be in no rush to make their hire. We’ll see if Orr is still available by the time they make their choice.
