Detroit Lions Mailbag: Which new Lions player can have an impact immediately?

We're almost done with the 2024 regular season. Just five more games and then it's playoff time. Let's have some fun with these mailbags before it's over.

I've been all in on the idea of trying Vaki there in the past as well, but at the end of the day he is doing so well in coverage and blocking on these things that I can fully understand why the Lions don't try him there. At this point he's having a Pro Bowl level special teams season, why risk that?

I think Kwon Alexander could have a big impact right away based off having some schematic knowledge of this defense since he's been with Aaron Glenn in New Orleans. That and I think this scheme plays well into what he can do for Detroit and that's being a solid run stopper and tackler. He's shown he can do both of those things very well even when he's dealt with injuries and setbacks.

Aside from him, 'm really interested in what the Lions plan to do with Jamal Adams. He's been doing some linebacker stuff in Detroit so far. He can rush the passer really well.

An interesting question. I don't know if I can narrow it down to just one guy and I don't know what your timeline is. If it's in the last few years, it's Jared Goff. It took some time for him to win everyone over and it's shouldn't have.

If its the last couple weeks its Kindle Vildor. I felt Lions fans were a little too mean to this guy after he struggled in the first half against the Colts. He's been good since the second half of that game.

If it's from before the season then it's Jake Bates, I'll join right in and say I was wrong to doubt the kid. He's proved he's got it. I'd throw Kerby Joseph in there too. There were some "smart football people" who really undervalued him this offseason.

I think Skipper has done ok in both starts. He's definitely not as good as Taylor Decker and it's noticeable. He's allowed seven pressures, five hurries and two hits in those games, but that's not too bad for a guy that's only done it twice. You're not going to find a backup tackle that comes in and plays at a super high level anywhere in the NFL. Skip is a good guy to have around because he'll basically do anything you ask of him and he won't ruin the entire game while he does it.

Absolutely. Injuries are bad, but I think they're being blown a little too out of proportion at this moment. The Lions still have a lot of their starters on defense healthy and they've been winning despite injuries all year. They're slated to get a lot of their guys back before the playoffs start and they made some decent additions in the last few weeks. That offense is still very good too. The Lions can definitely still win it all this year.

I would love to see it happen and I wouldn't be shocked if it did, but at the end of the day that is a very difficult thing to achieve. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions drop a game or two in this final stretch. I fully expect fans to freak out when that happens and maybe some of them will think it' all over at that point. But the Lions will be fine.

Health. That's it, just health.
