The Detroit Lions have had some injury issues as of late and that's resulted in them going out to find some help in free agency. Over the weekend the team signed former All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to their practice squad. In his first media availability as a Lion he mentioned something that had me thinking about the future and how the Lions might go about free agency in March.

It's that little thing in there about Aaron Glenn, who was coaching for the Saints at the time, being at Adams' Pro Day years ago that got me thinking about how important pre-draft meetings are to the Lions. Six players they met with pre-draft last year are currently on this team.

  • Terrion Arnold
  • Sione Vaki
  • Giovanni Manu
  • Morice Norris
  • Ennis Rakestraw
  • Nate Lynn

That's just the players we were able to confirm. It was very similar in 2023 as well. The Lions wound up with eight players they met with. Not all of them are still here, but the Lions still grabbed them.

  • Brian Branch
  • Hendon Hooker
  • Antoine Green
  • Sam LaPorta
  • Isaac Darkangleo
  • Dylan Drummond
  • Trevor Nowaske
  • Adrian Martinez

The point of all this is that GM's, coaches and players don't forget this pre-draft suff. Even though it's passed, it still matters. The Lions are still asked about different players ahead of games that they might have had interest in and they still talk about those players.

This March the Lions will have a shot at some of the players they initially had pre-draft meetings with in 2021 for the first time. Some of those guys are going to become free agents this offseason and the Lions may still be very interested in them.

In 2021 we were still in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, so meetings were virtual that year and weren't as reported as they usually are, so it's hard to know beyond a few guys who the Lions met with that year. We do know they met with cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. and linebacker K.J. Britt. We also know they talked to Cowboys All-Pro Micah Parsons a lot. Parsons won't be a free agent this March because the Cowboys picked up his fifth-year option, but he might be after next season.

We'll see what the Lions look to do in March, but right now I think its safe to say that they will have a few players in mind that they've already done some work on and have been watching for four years.

Stop calling the Detroit Lions defense depleted, it’s not

There is no doubt that the Detroit Lions have some injury issues right now. This cannot and will not be disputed. They're missing Aidan Hutchinson and Malcolm Rodriguez for the rest of the season and that sucks, but this right here makes no sense at all.  Depleted? Like I said, there's some injury issues. But […]
