I honestly can't remember the last time the Detroit Lions did something like this. Usually it's the Lions who are getting poached form. This time they're the poachers. The Lions have signed edger rusher Isaiah Thomas off the Bengals practice squad.
Thomas was a seventh-round pick out of Oklahoma in the 2022 NFL Draft. It was the Browns that made the selection. Thomas played 10 games there in his rookie year and racked up one sack and nine tackles. He spent his second season on the team's practice squad and then was waived in August. The Bengals picked him up and now it appears the Lions are stealing him away.
Thomas had a pretty productive preseason for the Browns this summer. In three games he had five pressures, two hurries, two quarterback hits and a sack. Not bad at all.
Since he's still just 25-years-old, the Lions, and defensive line coach Terrell Williams, may be looking to see what they can do with him for the future. Perhaps he could find himself in the rotation at some point. I know this doesn't exactly move the needle for Lions fans, but I doubt this is all they plan to do.
An important note to consider is that the Lions signed him off another teams practice squad. That means he is automatically signed to the Lions 53-man roster and not the practice squad.
