There was a real discussion among Green Bay Packers fans and pundits around the 2024 NFL draft regarding the team needing to get a cornerback early in the process. General manager Brian Gutekunst answered that by passing opportunities to select Nate Wiggins, Cooper DeJean, and Kool-Aid McKinstry, for instance.
Green Bay ended up grabbing a cornerback only in the seventh round — and Kalen King is on the practice squad now.
Especially with Eric Stokes slated to hit free agency and having a weak season, and with Jaire Alexander starting to get older, it makes total sense for the Packers to invest in the position again.
In the latest A to Z Sports mock draft, that’s exactly what the Packers did, taking Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison.
This is how our NFL Draft writer Destin Adams wrote about the thought process to make the decision:
"The Packers are off to a great start in the 2024 NFL season. As a result they are picking near the end of this 2025 NFL Mock Draft. Somehow that didn't stop me from landing them one of the top defensive prospects in this entire draft class. If Benjamin Morrison's injury and hip surgery wouldn't have happened he would likely be taken in the first 15 picks, possibly even inside the top 10. It did happen though, which likely will cause Morrison to slip down the board come next April. But I have a good feeling whoever lands the Notre Dame CB is going to leave the draft very happy."
Morrison is an aggressive cornerback, and the way he challenges wide receivers at the line of scrimmage is a good fit for what defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley likes to do.
Getting a top prospect at a premium position is exactly what you can expect from a first-round pick, so this would be a happy outcome for Green Bay.
