Anthony Richardson isn’t letting the Colts’ recent decision to bench him stop him from being the best teammate he can be
Anthony Richardson made sure Riley Leonard will always remember his first NFL touchdown
For the second time in less than a year, the Indianapolis Colts are delegating Anthony Richardson to the backup QB role. Head coach Shane Steichen announced that Daniel Jones will be the team’s starter ahead of week one of the 2025 regular season.
This has to feel like the lowest point of his three-year NFL career, but he isn’t letting it stop him from still being a great teammate. Richardson went out of his way to make sure the Colts’ 2025 sixth-round pick, Riley Leonard, got something special to remember his stellar performance in the Colts’ dominant preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Anthony Richardson made sure Riley Leonard got a special memento from his big preseason performance

Leonard saved his best performance for last by completing 15 of his 20 pass attempts for 189 yards and his first-ever NFL touchdown. And what a touchdown it was with him connecting with veteran WR Laquon Treadwell for a 59-yard touchdown. After a moment like that, players often forget all about trying to get that ball as a memento due to them living in the moment and celebrating with their teammates. Luckily for Leonard, someone on the team was looking out for him after his big day.
Richardson had Leonard’s back, getting the ball and making sure the Colts’ rookie got it after the game. Leonard shared that he planned to gift the ball to his father, whose birthday was actually yesterday as well. It would be easy for Richardson to let this benching get the best of him and let it affect him both personally and professionally. So far, though, that doesn’t seem to be the case with Richardson, still focused on being the best teammate he can be, and his kindness in that moment is one Leonard and his family will likely never forget.

The team elected to sit nearly all their starters and second-team players, allowing roster fringe players the chance to shine. Was it enough to make the Colts roster, though? That is the question in those players’ minds now. […]
