Andrew Luck confirms Colts fans suspicions by speaking on the team’s decision to sign Philip Rivers out of retirement
Andrew Luck speaks on the Colts signing Philip Rivers out of retirement and why the team didn’t sign him instead.
There were a lot of thoughts running through people’s minds after the Indianapolis Colts signed 44-year-old Philip Rivers out of retirement. Instinctively, Colts fans probably had an intrusive thought enter their minds, though. That being said, “I wonder if they called Andrew Luck before Rivers.”
The Colts’ former star QB and No. 1 overall pick spoke about his former team’s headline-stealing move. And he also shared the answer to that question, as well as why he isn’t the QB coming out of retirement to try and save the Colts’ season.
Andrew Luck confirms the Colts didn’t ask him to come out of retirement, but his answer would have been no
Luck appeared on The Jim Rome Show this week, and one of the topics discussed was, of course, the Colts’ signing Rivers. He was asked how many times the Colts had called him and how many times he had to decline their offer. His answer was pretty simple.
“Zero,” said Luck, “So I had zero chances to say no.” He was then asked what he would have said if the Colts called, and his answer is exactly what we all knew it would be, “No, thank you, I’m right where I’m supposed to be (Stanford football’s GM).”
Some may be shocked hearing that the Colts didn’t even call Luck to gauge his interest before signing Rivers. The reality, though, is that Luck has never wavered in his decision to retire. In the immediate years after his retirement, the two sides stayed in contact, just in case Luck ever got the itch to return, but it never came. Shane Steichen and Rivers’ close relationship led the two to communicate often, and the Colts head coach knew there was at least a chance he would say yes to their request.
