The Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens had a joint practice session on Tuesday as the teams prepare for their preseason opener on Thursday. The biggest thing fans wanted to know ahead of the game, though, was which QB would get the start.
Head coach Shane Steichen finally shared the answer after practice on Tuesday, along with revealing the team’s plan for their second preseason matchup.
Shane Steichen announces Anthony Richardson as the starter for the Colts’ preseason opener vs. the Ravens

Steichen announced that Anthony Richardson will be the team’s starter vs. the Ravens on Thursday night. This announcement comes after Steichen shared with the media before their travel to Baltimore that they knew who would start but weren’t ready to announce it. The Colts also gave Richardson the largest portion of their starting reps during Tuesday’s joint practice. Richardson and Daniel Jones are battling to be the team’s Week 1 starter vs. the Miami Dolphins. So far throughout training camp, the team has divided reps as evenly as possible. And their plan for the first two preseason games continues that trend, as Steichen also announced that Jones will be the Colts’ starter for their second preseason matchup vs. the Green Bay Packers.
The plan for both games is for the starter to play about a quarter and a half, and the backup for the day will finish that half. So both QBs will enter the final preseason matchup still on even playing field. The plan they have mapped out honestly makes me think they plan to announce the winner of this training camp battle ahead of their final preseason matchup vs. the Cincinnati Bengals. Most teams like to use that final preseason game as a dress rehearsal for the regular season, so it would be necessary for that decision to be offical if the Colts plan on following that blueprint.
