After the Indianapolis Colts cut their roster down to 53, Chris Ballard had glowing reviews for 7th-round pick Jaylon Jones.

And now we have a metric proving how good he's been playing to repay those comments.

To better explain the graph above, the bottom axis tracks the percentile of separation prevented by corners. The left axis tracks the percentage in which corners have been targeted while in coverage. Using both these stats, each corner has been plotted to compare to other corners.

  • Top Left: High Target %, Low Separation prevented
  • Bottom Left: Low Target %, Low Separation prevented
  • Top Right: Low Target %, High Separation prevented
  • Bottom Right: High Target %, High Separation prevented

The top right quadrant is the best area to find yourself on this graph. Which is where Jones' play has landed him. Jones' ability this season has transcended just being among the best rookie CBs this season. His play has mirrored some of the best CBs in the entire NFL.

  • Sauce Gardner
  • Pat Surtain II
  • Marlon Humphrey
  • A.J. Terrell
  • Xavien Howard
  • Kenny Moore II (Fellow Colts CB)

To find a CB of this caliber in the 7th round is wildly impressive. And the Colts have found starters in back-to-back years with their 7th-round selections (Jaylon Jones and Rodney Thomas). Chris Ballard and his team seem to have found a diamond in the rough with Jones, and if he continues this level of play, he could be a starter for the team for years to come.
