The Colts address a roster need not enough people are talking about by signing a player familiar with one of their top coaches

The Indianapolis Colts finally brought in a player who played under Lou Anarumo with the Cincinnati Bengals. The first former Bengals player joining the Colts, not occurring till May, wasn't on my bingo card, though.

Better late than never, I guess, with the team signing linebacker Joe Bachie.

Joe Bachie began his career in 2020 as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints. He went on to make his regular-season debut, though, with the Philadelphia Eagles that same season. He appeared in four games with the Eagles and only recorded two total tackles. He signed with the Bengals in 2021 and spent the last four years with the team. He appeared in 47 total games as a Bengal and logged two starts in 2021. His best season as a pro came during his first year in Cincinnati, when he recorded 30 total tackles.

He hasn't been much of a contributor on defense, especially over the past three years, but gaining a player with any experience in Anarumo's scheme seems like a plus ahead of training camp. The majority of his snaps have come on defense in recent years. After logging 160 defensive snaps in 2021, he has only recorded 60 defensive snaps total over the last three years. He has a ton of experience on special teams, though, with him recording 818 snaps over the last four years, including 503 over the past two seasons. The Colts lost special teams ace Grant Stuard this offseason. It's pretty well known that whatever LBs win the team's fringe roster training camp battles at the position will have to be able to produce on special teams. The 27-year-old LB's experience with Anrumo and his ability on special teams give him a better shot at making the Colts roster than some may realize.

Get to know more about Joe Bachie from a Bengals perspective

"Joe Bachie cut his teeth with the Bengals during the 2021 run to the Super Bowl. Injuries at the linebacker position forced him on the field late in the regular season, but a season-ending injury of his own prohibited him from building on that during the playoffs. He returned with earned trust in 2022 and became a reliable special teamer for the next three years, earning a one-year deal every offseason. He never quite saw the field on defense as much in his final years with the Bengals, but he was a favorite of former linebackers coach Al Golden and clearly still has a fan in Lou Anarumo. It's curious that the latter seems to want him more than the former, but the Bengals are moving on with younger pieces."
