New update shares exactly where things stand between Anthony Richardson and the Colts now that he’s lost the starting QB battle
NFL insider shares update on Antony Richardson’s future with the Colts
Ever since head coach Shane Steichen announced Daniel Jones as the Indianapolis Colts’ starting QB, many have wondered what the future holds for Anthony Richardson. The Colts have been adamant that they are not throwing in the towel on Richardson’s long-term fit in their future plans.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday that Colts’ general manager Chris Ballard recently met with Richardson’s agent Deiric Jackson. This type of meeting, which typically occurs after a player has been benched, often results in an official trade request being made. However, that isn’t the case for Richardson and the Colts at the moment.
Colts GM Chris Ballard met with Anthony Richardson’s agent
Fowler reports that the topic of a trade was discussed, but no trade request was made, and the Colts’ stance hasn’t changed: “Ballard reinforced that Indy has no plans to trade Richardson and still believes in the quarterback.” During this meeting, Jackson shared with Fowler that the two sides had cleared the air and called the meeting “very constructive.”
Richardson will be the Colts’ backup to start the year, after being the team’s Week 1 starter in his first two seasons. As Steichen mentioned on multiple occasions, he is one play away from being inserted into the starting lineup. This means that if Jones were to suffer an injury, he would also probably be re-inserted as a starter if he struggles to start the year. That can only happen if Richardson remains a member of the Colts. A trade request doesn’t seem to be coming; instead, Fowler shares that Richardson is taking a professional approach to his unfortunate benching.
“Richardson isn’t making any waves — he will remain professional, backing up Jones and maintaining his readiness. But part of his camp’s frustration is that all parties acknowledge patience would be required when Richardson was drafted. He entered the league with one year as a full-time high school starter and one year as a starter at Florida. He has admitted publicly that his leadership and maturity were not up to par in 2024, which contributed to his in-season benching.
But despite that, Richardson is 8-7 as an NFL starter, including two fourth-quarter comebacks late last season. He also worked on improving his regimen, leadership, mechanics, diet and ability to layer short-to-intermediate throws, resulting in improvement in camp that ultimately wasn’t enough to win the job. But the Colts know Richardson has a chance to play this season. This situation feels far from settled — and raises questions about how franchises fail young quarterbacks along the way.” – NFL Week 1 Buzz from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler
