Winning isn't always pretty in the NFL, and that was certainly the case for the Indianpolis Colts, who held on to win an ugly one against the Miami Dolphins.
We saw multiple players struggle and multiple highly criticized position groups step up and make plays that ultimately led to a Colts victory in Week 7. Now, the team sits above .500 on the year at 4-3.
Biggest takeaways from the Colts Week 7 win over the Dolphins
Tyler Goodson finally leads the Colts in carries
The Colts run game went over 100 yards in three of the first four weeks of the season. But then they had to play without Anthony Richardson and Jonathan Taylor for the past two weeks, and the run game was essentially nonexistent. The team gave Trey Sermon the majority of the carries in Weeks 5 and 6, and fans and even multiple members of the media have been begging for Tyler Goodson to get more opportunities while Taylor is sidelined. The team finally listened as Goodson had 14 carries, and Sermon ended the day with only eight. Goodson had multiple solid runs on the day, and he and Richardson combined for over 100 yards, and Goodson punched in the Colts' only touchdown of the day.
Anthony Richardson struggles but doesn't quit in return to the field
To say Richardson started out slow would be an understatement. He started 2/9 with just 19 passing yards. He completed eight of his next 15 pass attempts for 110 yards and added 56 yards on the ground. After missing the past two weeks, it was evident that Richardson had some rust he had to shake off. Today wasn't a good outing for the Colts' second-year QB, but I was impressed to see him not quit after struggling so much throughout the day. He ended the first half strong with his arm and made multiple impactful plays in the second half with both his arm and legs. He found a way to make an impact on a day when he wasn't at his best, and he played a part in helping the Colts pick up a big win.
The Colts' defense did their part despite the outside criticism of their group
The Colts' defense has had plenty of critics throughout this season, including myself. But to have to give them their flowers no matter who the QB was for the Dolphins today. They only allowed 10 points in the first half, and 0 in the second half as well as forcing two turnovers. A key stat that I think deserves attention is that the Colts played against one of the best WR duos in the NFL today, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. They held Waddle to one reception for 11 yards and Tyreek Hill to one reception for eight yards. As you read above, Richardson and the Colts' offense struggled today, and the Colts wouldn't have come out with the win if it hadn't been for the great play by the defense today.
Matt Gay had a strong outing to improve his confidence going forward
Lastly, another highly scrutinized player this season has been starting kicker Matt Gay. Entering today's game, he had made seven of his nine field goal attempts, with both misses coming from 50 yards out. Today he did his job perfectly, he attempted three field goals on the day and made all of them. One of which came from 52 yards out to put the Colts on the board before halftime. Hopefully, seeing that long one go in today helps build Gay's confidence back up, and we see a strong end of the season by the Colts kicker.
The Colts and Dolphins will both play without key starters with neither team being anywhere close to full strength
This Week 7 matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins is going to look significantly different than it did on paper when the schedule was announced in the offseason. Both will be playing without major contributors on both sides of the ball, with players on the injured reserve, and being listed on their inactive […]
