Chiefs now know they can find the perfect player to convert to a big weapon over the next few years for life after Travis Kelce
The Chiefs will need a big body receiver after Kelce leaves. They will also need a backup quarterback.
The Kansas City Chiefs have several pressing needs this offseason, along with some less urgent ones.
They need another quarterback, at least one to put up a battle with Jake Haener while Patrick Mahomes is out. They also need a big body receiver for life after Travis Kelce, whether that’s a tight end or a tall X receiver. Why not kill two birds with one stone? After watching the NFL Draft Combine on Saturday, the Chiefs learned they can get that in the 2026 NFL Draft, or maybe even in the undrafted free-agent market.
Chiefs should look into Arkansas QB Taylen Green
There is a chance that Green goes undrafted in this year’s NFL Draft. Now, I’m not sure the chance of that happening is as high now as it was before the Combine, but there’s still a chance. He’s not the best thrower of the ball, and his processing isn’t great. However, those things can be developed. Those are the most important things that can really hold him back in the draft.
The things that could keep him in the seven rounds are everything we saw on Saturday. Green finished with the best vertical jump of any quarterback at the Combine ever, with a 43.5-inch vertical. He also has the second-fastest 40-yard dash of all time for any quarterback with a 4.36. These things are going to likely make the same team that needs a quarterback jump at the chance to take him and develop him.
I know fans hate to hear about ifs, but if he does fall out of the draft, Kansas City should immediately try to grab him. Green could really battle with Haener as a QB to have while the Chiefs wait for Mahomes to come back. Then, when he does, they can start developing him into a tight end or a big X receiver. He’s fast, tall, and long—and would make a great playmaker at one of those positions.
Green would likely struggle to put on positive weight to become a tight end. So, I think his position could be a tall, long X receiver, and the Chiefs happen to need one of those as well. This would be a project that would take more than one offseason. Then again, if KC were to keep Green on their practice squad to develop him, someone else would end up signing him.
Either way, what Green did on Saturday was amazing, and the Chiefs could certainly get some good usage out of him.
