The San Francisco 49ers are already providing the Kansas City Chiefs with bulletin board material.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, 49ers DE Nick Bosa was asked about the Chiefs' offensive tackle tandem of LT Donovan Smith and RT Jawaan Taylor. Asked to give his impressions of what he's seen from the two players after watching them on tape, he gave the following response:
"They hold a lot," Bosa said.
Check it out:
Statistically speaking, Bosa isn't wrong. The Chiefs lead the NFL in offensive holding penalties in 2023 with 30 in 20 games so far this season. Taylor accounted for eight holding penalties at right tackle and Smith accounted for four holding penalties at left tackle.
All of that said, Bosa saying this in public in response to the specific question he was asked comes off in a completely different manner. It can be taken as someone who doesn't have a ton of respect for their competitors.
This also might be some strategy on the part of Bosa and the 49ers. The referee for the game is Bill Vinovich, who also officiated the Super Bowl LIV tilt between the Chiefs and 49ers. Vinovich didn't call a single offensive holding penalty on the offensive line in that game. Keep in mind that the Chiefs had an entirely different group of tackles in that game.
Vinovich did call one offensive holding penalty on Chiefs WR Byron Pringle. One of the major storylines out of San Francisco afterward is how Bosa was held on Kansas City's now-iconic Jet Chip Wasp play. Bosa certainly has a reason to be vocal here, but it feels like it might not have the intended effect.
This team has dealt with plenty of disrespect and doubt in the playoffs leading up to this matchup in Super Bowl LVIII and it has fueled each of their victories. This isn't exactly a bear that you want to poke and Bosa just kicked it in the stomach.
WKU’s Malachi Corley showing at Senior Bowl he could give Chiefs perfect one-two punch at wide receiver
The Kansas City Chiefs are interested in a Senior Bowl standout at wide receiver who made his money in college football with impressive play after the catch.
