The Kansas City Chiefs and San Fransisco 49ers have had a lot of player connections over the years, but none bigger than quarterback Alex Smith.

Before Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs were known for bringing in former 49ers' quarterbacks, including Smith, Elvis Grbac, Steve Bono, and Joe Montana. K.C. had two playoff runs with Montana at the helm but couldn't get over the hump to the Super Bowl. Grbac and Bono never panned out and neither of them won a playoff game.

The Chiefs went back to the 49er quarterback well again in 2013, acquiring Smith via trade. Smith was drafted by S.F. with the first overall pick of the 2005 NFL Draft and was nearly chalked up to being a bust until he broke through in 2011 and had a career year. He was off to another good start in 2012, but missed time down the stretch of the season with a concussion and ultimately lost his job to former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Smith would go on to play the best ball of his career in K.C. He finished his five-year Chiefs career with a 50-26 record, 17,608 passing yards and 102 touchdowns. Unfortunately, when playoff time rolled around, it was the same old story. Smith left K.C. with a 1-4 postseason record, the only win coming in a wildcard game against the Houston Texans.

Despite the lack of playoff success, Smith is generally remembered fondly by Chiefs fans. He brought stability to the quarterback position for K.C. after years of incompetence. His mentorship of Mahomes paid huge dividends in Mahomes understanding the offense and being a leader. Now as an analyst for ESPN, Smith does his fair share of Chiefs stories and has great insight into how the team operates.

While on the "Adam Schefter Podcast" on Tuesday, Smith gave the Chiefs a ringing endorsement for their upcoming showdown with the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

"This 49er defense doesn't do a lot; they don't present a lot of volume." Smith said, " I think they're going to be in for it. The only chance I think the Niners have to win is a little bit of a shootout, and again, this Chiefs' defense just continues to elevate their game."

As a former 49er and living back in the Bay Area, Smith also has a lot of insight on this year's Niners team. His opinion can be backed up by the matchup between these two teams last year, which the Chiefs ran away with by a 44-23 final score. K.C. racked up 529 total yards of offense that day and found the endzone six times. It's hard to imagine S.F. keeping up in a shootout with how dominant the Chiefs' defense has been this year.
