Chiefs HC Andy Reid jokingly let’s it be known he’s very aware of what he’s doing to one player with the offense
Andy Reid and the Chiefs are running the ball with Kareem Hunt at a high level.
The Kansas City Chiefs finally put their heads down and ran the ball when they needed to most against the Indianapolis Colts. They never led the games outside of the game-winning field goal, yet head coach Andy Reid called 36 run plays for running backs, the most he’s called in a long time. Running back Kareem Hunt, who had 30 of those carries, is doing just fine this week, surprisingly.
“I’m proud of him (Kareem Hunt). He’s upright, which is a positive thing (and) he’s doing good,” Reid told reporters jokingly on Tuesday. “It just shows you what he’s put into it. At that age (and) at the position, those guys don’t normally hang around very long and be productive like he was this past week, and he wanted more. I guess that’s a good thing.”
Chiefs will continue to lean on Hunt, but he may get more help soon
It’s not ideal that the Chiefs had to give Hunt 30 carries, especially considering he’s 30 years old, and in running backs terms, that’s pretty old. The guy has a ton of mileage on him, even if it doesn’t look like it on those third/fourth and short situations. Hunt was awesome, but doing that for the rest of the season is just not sustainable.
Not to mention, the Dallas Cowboys, who the Chiefs play on Thanksgiving Day, now have a pretty good interior with Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams. Hunt running up the middle won’t be nearly as easy as it was against the Colts, who were without DeForest Buckner. Luckily, Hunt could have some reinforcements back to help him on Thursday.
“We’ll see how he (Isiah Pacheco) does today, and we will get him there,” Reid said on Tuesday. “He’ll play. How much? I can’t tell you that right now. We’ll see how it goes.”
Clyde Edwards-Helaire gave the Chiefs some carries and had a few big runs in critical situations, too, against the Colts. Adding Pacheco back to that mix, even a little bit, to take Hunt off the field a few more times is big. That allows Hunt, the AFC Offensive Player of The Week, to stay fresher for the end of the game.
The Chiefs are leaning on Hunt and the run game, just as they should. Now, can they do it against a Cowboys team that just beat the Philadelphia Eagles after training by 21 points on the road?
