One of the unsung heroes of this Kansas City Chiefs defense had a stellar game last Sunday. Bashaud Breeland has developed into a near lockdown corner but is still not a household name.
All he needs is a significant contract now or a big game to showcase his skill against big-name receivers by the NFL standards. Well, he has done one of those a few times now.
Most recently, Sunday, When the Buffalo Bills Came to town and were ambushed. The NFL's third-ranked offense, according to Pro Football Focus, was shut down.
Kansas City allowed just 15 points before the fourth quarter and destroyed yet another narrative. This Chiefs defense is much better than people realize, and after Sunday, the league better know by now.
The main proprietor of that accomplishment is Bashaud Breeland. The 28-year-old cornerback from Clemson has had his share of unfortunate events. Prior to the season, Breeland was arrested and missed four games.
Now, it seems that Breeland has everything on track, including his play. Breeland gets the blessing of guarding the opposing team's best receiver for some of the game. Suppose you ask me, that makes him elite. Just look at what he did Sunday against Buffalo.
Breeland, Chiefs Defense Went to Work Against Bills
There really was not a defensive player who played poorly this past Sunday. However, there was a lot that played well. Breeland being one of them.
With 69 total defensive snaps in the game, Breeland graded at 81.7 overall. That grade by PFF's standards makes him the second-highest on the Chiefs defense for this game.
Bashaud Breeland took 58 coverage snaps in the game and graded in that area at 86.1. That makes last Sunday his second-best coverage performance of the season behind week seven against Denver.
Looking at the numbers, Breeland covered almost every receiver possible. Not very shocking, but not one of them had any success while being defended.
Cole Beasley was the most successful among the Bills receivers. He landed one catch for 23 yards, but that is it. Of course, there is a story going around that Beasley played on a broken leg, so we cannot judge this data too closely.
Maybe one of the best, if not the best, receivers this year is Stefon Diggs. The newly acclimated Buffalo Bill had a pretty impressive season, to say the least.
While he had a few throws go his way, I'm sure he would have loved to have a better game. Diggs was not the leading receiver on the team like he was most of the season. Some of that can be attributed to Bashaud Breeland and his exceptional defense.
Diggs finished the game with one catch for six yards in the matchup between the two. That may be part of the reason he finished with a 62 grade by PFF.
Bashaud Breeland needs more recognition, and he will get it. In the Superbowl, he will have the luxury of guarding a couple of different great receivers.
