The Kansas City Chiefs have put together some great drafts over the past two seasons, adding a plethora of youth and talent on the defensive side of the ball.
Now, it's time to finally give the offense the same sort of attention. Some positions need to be addressed with the long-term future in mind, while others need a complete overhaul.
For 2024, the Chiefs currently have just five draft picks, but they could have as many as seven once conditional draft picks have been awarded. The kicker is that they're currently projected to have just three draft picks in the top 100 selections. Brett Veach and his staff will have to be quite selective at those spots.
The roster, however, has some very clear needs as things currently stand. That could all change with free agency, but for now, here's a look at five of the biggest needs:
Wide receiver
This is undoubtedly the top need in Kansas City, no matter how you dice it.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling is going to be cut because of his price tag and performance.
Skyy Moore hasn't developed as you'd hoped.
Kadarius Toney can't stay healthy enough to be a No. 1 wide receiver.
Justyn Ross' future is cloudy, even with him getting off the Commissioner's Exempt List.
Realistically speaking, the Chiefs might only keep a handful of players from their current wide receiver group. Rashee Rice and Justin Watson should be sticking around, but no one else should be considered safe after this season.
Ideally, the Chiefs will use their first-round draft pick to address the issue. They also would be wise to supplement that pick with some Day 2 or Day 3 draft picks, and a veteran addition in free agency.
A player to keep an eye on for the future is Fresno State WR Nikko Remigio, who was injured during the preseason and placed on injured reserve ahead of the 2023 NFL season.
Some names to know:
- Texas WR Adonai Mitchell
- Texas WR Xavier Worthy
- LSU WR Brian Thomas Jr.
- Oregon WR Troy Franklin
- Colorado State WR Tory Horton
- South Carolina WR Xavier Legette
Defensive tackle
Chris Jones, Derrick Nnadi, and Tershawn Wharton are slated for free agency. All three of them may end up on different teams next year. Jones has even admitted that this might be his final year with the Chiefs.
The team has some intriguing developmental defensive tackle prospects in Neil Farrell Jr. and Keondre Coburn, but these players haven't seen much action at all in 2023. A top-100 draft pick at this position is probable to go along with some investments made in free agency.
Some names to know:
- Miami DT Leonard Taylor
- LSU DT Maason Smith
- Ohio State DT Michael Hall Jr.
- Texas DT T'Vondre Sweat
- FSU DT Braden Fiske
Running back
Chiefs fans are going to find out this weekend just how thin their running back room is without Isiah Pacheco. The second-year starter has been ruled out against the Bills in Week 14. Kansas City desperately needs to find lightning to Pacheco's thunder for the future, especially when his running style lends itself to contact and injury.
The Chiefs might not need to invest major draft capital to find that player, but they need to make an effort to find someone on Day 2 or Day 3. Developing players like Deneric Prince and Keaontay Ingram would be ideal as it'd create a competitive environment for whoever they do add in the 2024 NFL draft.
Some names to know:
-
Kentucky RB Ray Davis
- Kansas RB Devin Neal
- Southern Miss RB Frank Gore Jr.
- Arizona RB Michael Wiley
- New Hampshire RB Dylan Laube
Tight end
Travis Kelce is going to be another year older. Blake Bell and Noah Gray are set for free agency. Jody Fortson is going to be coming back from injury and will be a restricted free agent. Matt Bushman and Gerrit Prince will have spent a season developing on the practice squad, but will they be enough?
This so happens to be a really good tight end class. You'd love to get a generational prospect like Brock Bowers, but you can also land some serious talent on Day 2 and Day 3 of the draft, which might be better for a team like Kansas City. I already outlined a few of my favorite options for the Chiefs here.
Offensive line
Wanya Morris could be the future at the left tackle position in Kansas City, and his performance in place of Donovan Smith over the next few weeks will tell that story. If he can lock down a starting position, the Chiefs need to start thinking about the future of their interior offensive line.
Joe Thuney is probably gone after the 2024 NFL season. Nick Allegretti could walk in free agency this year. In 2025, the Chiefs will have contracts due for both Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey. Who do you keep of the two players?
Thankfully, this is a really good year to need an offensive lineman, both interior and at the tackle position. They could even opt to add a player like Michigan's Zak Zinter, who suffered a season-ending leg injury and probably won't be ready until late next season or 2025.
Latest Chiefs injury news makes victory over Bills that much more difficult
The Kansas City Chiefs ruled out four players for Week 14 against the Buffalo Bills, including their starting running back.
