It seems like every offseason, Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach finds a running back either late in the draft or as an undrafted free agent who is much better than people think. He could do that again this time around.
Now, the Chiefs don't have a huge need at running back. They still have Isaiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt entering a contract year. Those two worked well at times last year. The Chiefs also brought on former San Francisco 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell. However, that doesn't mean they don't need some guys on the practice squad for depth and development.
This running back class is stacked, one of the deepest we have ever seen. GM Brett Veach is doing what he does, checking out players most haven't heard of, who could be diamonds in the rough.
Chiefs to visit with Central Arkansas RB
The Chiefs are set to visit with an FCS running back that most people may not even know about, but man, can he play football.
Shunderrick Powell is a running back for the Central Arkansas Bears, standing at 5’9” and 180 pounds. Originally from Hoxie, Arkansas, he transferred from North Alabama in 2023 and quickly became a standout at the FCS level. Known for his speed and agility, Powell has rushed for over 1,000 yards each of the past three seasons, including 1,341 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2024, averaging 121.9 yards per game.
His best games include a 258-yard performance with a 95-yard run against Abilene Christian in 2023 and a 251-yard, four-touchdown game for North Alabama in 2022. He’s also a capable receiver and return man, adding versatility to his game.
Despite his smaller size, his production and athleticism have drawn interest from teams like the Chiefs and New England Patriots. Because of where he went to school and not being a big-time household name, he's projected as a late Day 3 pick or even a UDFA.
But just because that's what he's projected to be, doesn't mean that's what he will be. For all we know, he could go in the fifth round because that's just how crazy the NFL Draft is. The Chiefs could use one of their three seventh-round picks to jump the line ahead of undrafted free agency. And, if he does go undrafted, Brett Veach could do what he always does and find a diamond in the rough.
