The Kansas City Chiefs, on their last leg with no first or second-string quarterback, put up a good fight against the Denver Broncos on Christmas Night. The Chiefs were close to winning. A lot of things didn’t go their way, and no single reason is why they lost. However, you have to wonder how the game would have gone had Chris Jones not jumped offside on that last fourth down.

It was a bit of deception and trickery from the Broncos that did the job. Denver made Jones, the best defensive tackle in football over the last few years, commit a critical error he never makes.

“It was an odd-ball formation that we hadn’t shown before,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said, per Troy Renck. “It’s a no-brainer freeze-out of a different formation. We were going to take a delay of game. It was called Harrisburg. A unique one. Then Meinerz was barking the cadence out as the heel came up, and he gets Air Jordans for the offensive line.”

Chiefs DT Chris Jones recognized his error on fourth down post-game

After the loss, which only helped the Chiefs with a potentially higher pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Jones recognized the big mistake he had made. Sure, the Chiefs losing this game is better for them in April, when the draft kicks off, but these guys still want to win every single game. They do not care about being eliminated from the postseason

“I know, I’m beating myself up,” Jones told reporters after the loss in a joking way. “Yeah, I could have saved us four points. I felt like the guard moved. In a critical situation, I’ve got to be better… I knew it, I knew it. We were right there.”

Jones had a pretty good game on Thursday. He had the sack and a handful of other plays where he was very dominant. However, Jones shouldn’t be falling for things like that, especially not in those kinds of situations.

This game virtually means nothing in the long run, so this isn’t as big a deal. However, the Broncos pulled one over on the Chiefs, and that alone has to feel bad enough for Jones and KC.
