Cook threw a punch at San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams' helmet following a play late in the fourth quarter. It's unclear what influenced Cook to make that decision. Williams retaliated with a punch of his own, which he was fined $11,817 for.
The officials didn't see Cook's punch, but did see the one by Williams. As a result, Williams received a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty and was ejected from the game. His fine is also approximately $4,000 more than Williams', which is a bit puzzling.
It's never pleasant to get fined, but Cook got off relatively easy here considering he threw the first punch. At the end of the day, hitting somebody in the helmet isn't smart because it can really only hurt your hand. It also wasn't wise to pick a fight with someone like Williams, who is one of the biggest and most aggressive players in the league.
Cook had a solid game otherwise, recording four tackles against the 49ers. He's having a good season with 30 tackles, one interception and four passes defensed. Fortunately, he didn't do any damage to his hand or get a suspension.
Hopefully Cook learns from his mistake and doesn't get caught up in another similar situation. He doesn't have a history of getting into trouble, so this was likely just a one-time incident.
