Buffalo Bills steal a page from Kansas City Chiefs’ playbook with Mecole Hardman touchdown in AFC Divisional Round vs. Denver Broncos
The Bills just can’t get the Chiefs out of their head.
The Kansas City Chiefs are not in the playoffs this season, yet the Buffalo Bills can’t seem to get KC out of their minds. The latest example came during the AFC Divisional Round on Saturday, when the Bills faced the Denver Broncos, KC’s AFC West rival. The first half was exciting, highlighted by the game’s first touchdown—a “corndog” play run by Mecole Hardman.
Bills steal Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning play with Hardman
Memories of the last Super Bowl, when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers at the Las Vegas Raiders’ stadium, remain fresh. During overtime, the Chiefs walked it off. The play with Hardman was called Corndog: he motioned inside from the right side, the ball was snapped, and Hardman cut back out to the right, leaving the defense behind. He was wide open for a touchdown.
The Bills did the same exact play with the same exact player against the Broncos. That put them up 7-3 over Denver, though, and not to win a Super Bowl, as they’ve never even been in that kind of situation before. It is worth noting that Hardman was much more open on this play with the Bills than the one with KC.
It’s a sign of respect from the Bills in a way, because everyone in the NFL, even their biggest rivals, respects Andy Reid and what he’s done offensively. Bills OC Joe Brady is no different. They’re rivals, well, regular-season rivals, but everyone takes things from everyone in this league. As the old saying goes, “it’s a copycat league.”
Chiefs fans may have found themselves pointing at the TV when the play happened. Now, they have to decide who they want to win, with a trip to the AFC Championship and then the Super Bowl on the line. Do you want the Bills and Hardman to have a shot to get their ring, knocking out their historic AFC West rival, the Broncos? Or do you want Josh Allen not to have a chance at a Super Bowl ring, and not to get one without KC in the postseason? Then again, if Allen’s only Super Bowl ring ends up being the one where he didn’t have to get past Mahomes, that may only help Mahomes’ case more.
It feels good to see Hardman get some success, though.
