More offensive line woes for the Los Angeles Chargers ahead of their Week 1 tilt with Kansas City Chiefs.
The Los Angeles Chargers woke up to some bad news in São Paulo, Brazil, ahead of their matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1. The bad news comes at a position group where they can hardly afford it.
The Chargers announced on Friday that starting right guard Mekhi Becton has been added to the injury report and will be questionable for the game with an illness. A former first-round draft pick by the New York Jets, Becton came to Los Angeles by way of the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency. He was meant to help bolster the offensive line as they geared up for Greg Roman’s run-heavy offense.

What does this mean for the Chiefs vs. Chargers Week 1 game in Brazil?
Los Angeles was already dealing with a significant blow to their offensive line after LT Rashawn Slater suffered a season-ending knee injury. As a result, they moved Joe Alt from the right tackle spot to left tackle, and Trey Pipkins came off the bench to start at right tackle. A questionable designation doesn’t mean that Becton will be ruled out for the game, but the fact that the illness is enough to put his status in question is notable. If we’re to believe the Chargers’ unofficial depth chart, Jamaree Salyer would be the next man up at right guard for Los Angeles should Becton be unable to play. Currently, it’s a possibility that the entire right side of the Chargers’ offensive line will be comprised of backup players at kickoff. That’s not great for a team that wants to establish the run, but also needs to protect Justin Herbert against Steve Spagnuolo’s elaborate blitz schemes.
