Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Charles Omenihu has been through extreme highs and lows over the past year.
Heading into last season's AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, Omenihu was a force for Kansas City's defense. Unfortunately, it all came to a sudden and painful halt. Not long after recording a strip sack on Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, Omenihu tore his ACL.
The injury cost him a chance to play in Super Bowl LVIII, as well as the first 11 games of the 2024 regular season. Omenihu has worked very hard to get back on the field in time to help his team for the stretch run, and the defense has been noticeably improved since he's returned.
Now nearly one year removed from his major knee injury, Omenihu is gearing up to play in another AFC Championship Game. He is back on top of his game, recording four tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble in last week's divisional playoff win over the Houston Texans.
While speaking to the media on Friday, Omenihu reflected on what he's been through to get back to this point.
"I've had a lot of nights where I've prayed about this and my recovering and being at where I need to be to help this organization win big games," Omenihu said. "And it's happened. I hope it continues to happen, because that's truly what I want – to give back to everybody that has been patient with me and my time here."
Omenihu also talked about how hard it was to miss out on playing in the Super Bowl last year, but is excited to have the opportunity get there this year.
"It was tough, super tough," Omenihu said about missing the Super Bowl. "It being my former team (San Francisco 49ers). It being the biggest stage you can play on. Big stages are what I thrive on, what I love, what I want. What keeps me searching for the next thing to do is to play in big moments and make plays. So, it was tough, it was crazy, but hopefully we get the opportunity to do it again. And I had a couple anxious nights where I'll be up till 1:00 in the morning listening to music, just telling myself everything is going to be good come leading up into this game (vs. Buffalo). Because it's going to be 363 days from when I got hurt. So, it's a big thing for me personally, and the energy will be channeled to making a few plays out there on that field."
Omenihu could be a game-changer on Sunday as it will be crucial for the Chiefs to get pressure on Bills quarterback Josh Allen. The future is uncertain for Omenihu as he currently slated to hit free agency during the offseason. If he can make a big impact against Buffalo and in the Super Bowl should K.C. make it, he'll have several teams interested in his services.
