The Kansas City Chiefs just made a move that would suggest they are playing chess, while the rest of the league is playing checkers. Just when we thought they were running out of cap space in free agency to sign some more players, they get super smart.

Per Field Yates of ESPN, the Chiefs have converted $12 million of Patrick Mahomes’ 2023 roster bonus into a signing bonus, creating $9.6 million in cap space.

This is one of the smarter moves you will see in and around the league. Sure, other teams have probably done this too, but it's smart because of how much money Mahomes is being paid overall. Now they can have more flexibility in free agency.

Now the Chiefs have $16 million in cap space, per Over the Cap, and maybe even more than that, as they still have several holes to fill on their team during free agency.

That may not seem like a big deal, but it's huge. That might be enough to sign guys like Fletcher Cox, Leonard Floyd, or even Taylor Lewan if he would be okay playing right tackle.

This was such a smart move by Brett Veach and the Chiefs, and of course, Patrick Mahomes who agreed to do it. The Super Bowl champs are playing chess.
