The Kansas City Chiefs had one of the worst wide receiver rooms last season, yet, as we have said a million times, they still found a way to win the Super Bowl. That doesn't mean they can't get better in that area; they most certainly can and should.
But the wide receiver room looks much better now than it did a few months ago. Marquez Valdes-Scantling will be a Kansas City legend for some of the plays he made in the playoffs. However, it was time for the Chiefs to move on, and everyone saw it coming. Mecole Hardman made some huge plays, including the game-winning play, but it's possible he won't return as well.
Richie James is a free agent, and the Chiefs may not bring him back, as he had a very up-and-down season. So, that leaves three more spots the Chiefs can fill on the WR front. They filled one on Thursday night with the signing of free-agent wide receiver Hollywood Brown. Now, they can look to the draft to fill those other two spots at wide receiver.
The Chiefs should certainly look into wide receiver Ladd McConkey from Georgia. Here is the breakdown of McConkey from the A to Z Sports' Big Board:
- Shifty & precise route runner at all levels of the field
- Uses physical hands & quick footwork to create leverage vs press
- Manipulates corners with head fakes & stutter steps
- No problem sinking his hips & cutting off routes on the vertical plane
- Midpoints zone coverage defenders & runs routes at the proper depth
- Good speed to win vertically on double moves/posts
When the Chiefs signed Brown, they got a guy who could immediately take the top off of the defense. They had the two short yardage and immediate guys in Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce, and the next biggest thing they needed was a deep threat. They got that, and now they need a guy who can get open at will, has the elite route running, is fast, and catches the ball. That is McConkey.
Now, he does have some flaws, though, as well.
- Below-average size/frame
- A small catch radius will limit his effectiveness in the middle of the field
- Only two career 100+ yard games
- Struggled to stay healthy at Georgia
The Chiefs will likely go with a wide receiver in the first round or, trade back into the early second round, or even trade up – we really don't know what general manager Brett Veach will have up his sleeve. On A to Z Sports' Big Board, McConkey is the 29th overall prospect and the sixth overall wide receiver.
If the Chiefs are on the clock and McConkey is still available, I could easily see them go that direction.
Kansas City Chiefs finally make the move that will make QB Patrick Mahomes happy
