Chiefs’ 2025 playoff hopes come to an end as Patrick Mahomes suffers apparent knee injury in Week 15 loss to Chargers
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes suffered an injury just before the team was officially eliminated from playoff contention.
The Kansas City Chiefs have dealt with injuries all day in Week 15 vs. the Los Angeles Chargers, but things just hit disaster levels for the embattled team.
Not only did the Chiefs officially get eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2014 with a loss to the Chargers, but their star quarterback suffered an apparent left knee injury late in the game. The season is lost, and Mahomes appears to be lost with it. It’s a painfully brutal, yet fitting end to a season that hasn’t gone the way of Kansas City at any turn.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes suffers apparent knee injury in fourth quarter
With just under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes suffered a left knee injury on a tackle from Chargers DT DaShawn Hand.
Mahomes had dealt with a left knee injury for the past two games, but he had been playing through it. He seemingly aggravated the injury trying to make something out of nothing, but was wrapped up and twisted down as he threw the ball away.
Mahomes was down on the field for a while before getting up and walking off under his own strength. He was seen being helped to the locker room by the training staff on the broadcast. It didn’t look good, and we’ll soon learn more about the injury when Andy Reid speaks to the media following the loss.
Chiefs backup QB Gardner Minshew tried and failed to save the season
Gardner Minshew replaced Mahomes with under two minutes to go and a chance to win the game. He hadn’t thrown a regular-season pass this season. Minshew gave it a shot and went 3-of-5 for 22 yards before throwing a game-sealing interception in the red zone. A field goal would’ve tied things up and potentially sent the game to overtime. However, the Chiefs went for it all in that situation. They gambled and lost.
With the Ravens, Jaguars, and Bills winning their Week 15 games in the early slate, the Chiefs were officially eliminated from playoff contention with a loss.
