The Kansas City Chiefs are AFC West division champs once again. They fell short against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 16 on Christmas Day, but they delivered a heck of a send-off to 2023 on New Year's Eve against the Cincinnati Bengals.
With a 25-17 victory in Week 17, the Chiefs have clinched the AFC West division for the eighth consecutive season. It wasn't easy, seemingly taking everything the team had on both offense and defense to get the job done.
K.C. has now surpassed the 1973-1979 Los Angeles Rams to hold the second-longest streak of division titles in the history of the NFL. Only the 2009-2019 New England Patriots have a longer streak of division titles in NFL history. The Chiefs need four more division titles to surpass the Patriots' record and have the longest streak in NFL history.
Kansas City now has 16 total AFC West wins, the most among any team in the division. They broke a tie with the Raiders, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Chargers, who all have 15 total AFC West wins. The Seattle Seahawks have two division wins (1988, 1999) back when they were members of the division from 1977-2002.
That's not all, though.
Clinching the division also marks the ninth consecutive playoff appearance for the Chiefs. That ties Kansas City with the 2002-2010 Indianapolis Colts and the 1975-1983 Dallas Cowboys for the second-most consecutive playoff appearances in NFL history. The aforementioned Patriots team is the only team with a longer consecutive streak of playoff appearances.
It is also the Chiefs' ninth consecutive regular season with at least 10 wins, which ties the 2002-2010 Colts for the third-most of such seasons in NFL history. Only the San Francisco 49ers (1983-1998) and the Patriots (2003-2019) have longer streaks with 10 regular season wins or more.
What have we learned in the last 8-9 seasons of play?
So long as Andy Reid is in charge, and Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback in Kansas City, they'll always be in the thick of the competition for the AFC West division.
