Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirms suspicions on rookie LT Josh Simmons’ wrist injury with latest roster move ahead of Week 14
The Kansas City Chiefs will be without their starting left tackle, Josh Simmons, who heads to injured reserve after playing just eight games during his rookie season.
The Kansas City Chiefs opened the practice week with some unfortunate news on starting LT Josh Simmons.
We learned shortly after the team’s Week 13 loss to the Dallas Cowboys that Simmons had suffered a fractured and dislocated wrist. The injury appeared to be friendly fire on a chip block from RB Kareem Hunt, with Simmons’ arm getting pinned between Hunt and the defender. Last week’s reports indicated that Simmons would likely miss some time with the injury, and that injured reserve could be an option for Kansas City.
On Monday, Chiefs HC Andy Reid said Simmons was getting a second opinion on the injury before the team decided on how to proceed. We now know that Simmons will, in fact, be heading to injured reserve after undergoing surgery on his wrist.
“Then, Josh Simmons ended up having surgery on that wrist for a fracture and a dislocation,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid told reporters on Wednesday. “He’ll go on to IR, and then we’ll just see about the recovery on that, where it goes from there.”
With just five games remaining in the 2025 NFL regular season, this move may end the rookie campaign for Simmons. He’ll be required by NFL rules to sit out the next four weeks until Week 18, at which point he could be designated to return from injured reserve if he’s healthy and ready. No matter when he returns to action, Coach Reid has faith that he’ll bounce back strong from the injury despite the disappointment in it happening.
“So listen, your kid loves to play football, and, you know, that’s that part,” Reid continued. “He’s depressed about that part. That’s probably the wrong word. He’s down about that part, but he’s upbeat. I mean, the surgery went well, which was a real positive, and so he feels good about that, and then it’s just a matter of coming back. He’s did a great job with his knee coming back. He’s a worker, so he’s whatever he can do to rehab it. He’s going to do. That’s just how he rolls.”
Chiefs rookie LT Josh Simmons’ rookie season might be over
The 32nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, the Chiefs selected Simmons after a slight trade down with the Philadelphia Eagles. It was a decision many questioned after the team shelled out $20M to secure Jaylon Moore in free agency. The 22-year-old was allowed to start right away during the offseason program and into training camp, becoming the team’s opening day starter at left tackle.
Simmons started the first five games for the Chiefs at left tackle, but missed the next four games (five weeks, including the bye) to attend to a personal family situation. If Simmons’ season is over, it’ll be a small yet encouraging sample size.
Chiefs LT Josh Simmons’ 2025 NFL season stats (via PFF):
- Games started: 8 of 12 possible.
- Offensive snaps: 526
- Penalties: 8
- Pressures: 18
- Sacks: 2
Whether or not this is the end of Simmons’ rookie season remains to be seen. It’ll come down to whether the Chiefs can keep themselves alive and make a run in the playoffs. That’d likely give him the best chance to return to action and play. Regardless of whether or not he comes back to play this season or postseason, the future looks bright for the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick. He should end up being a long-time contributor to this offense’s success.
