The Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made a decision this past offseason that I think he is glad he made.

This team is so young, a lot younger than people may think. The Chiefs will be good for a while because of their young core, and part of that young core is Nick Bolton, one of the best young linebackers in the league. A guy who in his second season broke the Chiefs' single-season record for tackles.

This offseason Andy Reid made the decision to make Bolton the green dot on defense, or, the guy who basically acts as the quarterback of the defense. He relays the plays, and so on and so forth.

We have seen that decision take his game to a whole other level.

“I think he’s done a great job of understanding and leading the defense," Reid told the media on Tuesday He’s got to make all the calls, he’s the transmitter between the front and the back end (of the defense). He’s done a great job with communicating that and still being – with that load – still being the player and making the tackles that he’s made. He’s as sure (of a) tackler that you have in this league.”

One reason the Chiefs defense made the jump they did is because of how much Bolton has improved overall. It may not seem like much, but Bolton is a huge reason they are better than they have been in the past.

His sideline-to-sideline speed is what separates him from a lot of linebackers in the league, along with his ability to always be around the ball, which is why he finished with 180 tackles on the season. He has handled being a captain and a leader very well, too.

The Chiefs made a great pick two years ago, and he is only just getting started.
