Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid makes the coaching change fans have been begging him to make for several seasons
One position coach is out after seven seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid has begun making changes to his coaching staff, starting with a decision fans have been asking for since the 2024 NFL season.
As confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are set to move on from WRs coach Connor Embree. He initially joined the staff as a defensive assistant in 2019, before becoming an offensive quality control coach in 2021. From there, Embree continued to rise through the ranks of the Chiefs’ coaching staff, taking over as the team’s wide receivers coach in 2023 after Greg Lewis left the organization to join the Baltimore Ravens’ staff.
This is technically the second position coach change for the Chiefs so far, with assistant D-Line coach Alex Whittingham joining the Michigan coaching staff. Rapoport seems to suggest that it will not be the last change for Reid’s staff in Kansas City. That could even extend beyond Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo receiving interviews for head-coaching jobs.
Connor Embree officially out as Chiefs’ wide receiver coach
Fans have been calling for Embree’s removal since his inaugural season in 2023, when the Chiefs’ wide receiver group led the NFL in dropped passes. However, the biggest issue during his tenure with the team has been his inability to develop new and incoming wide receivers. Skyy Moore, for instance, has latched on in San Francisco, improving on both offense and special teams. Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy have failed to make significant progress under his watch. Really, the only success story is Tyquan Thornton, who fizzled out in this offense after a hot start as a focal point early on in the 2025 NFL season.
Where do the Chiefs go from here at wide receivers coach?
The Chiefs will likely wait for a decision on their offensive coordinator for the 2026 NFL season before they bring on a new wide receivers coach. That said, the aforementioned Greg Lewis is likely to be looking for a job after John Harbaugh was fired in Baltimore. Lewis, of course, was the Chiefs’ wide receivers coach from 2017 through 2020 before he made the switch to running backs coach in 2021.
