Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach could soon break a roster trend that has persisted throughout his tenure during 53-man roster cuts.
Since Reid first arrived as head coach back in 2013, the team has never kept more than six receivers on the initial 53-man roster. Don't believe it? Check out this cool chart from my KC Sports Network colleague, Joseph Hefner.
This year, things could be different in Kansas City simply because they have a wealth of talent at the receiver position (and because of the injury uncertainty with Kadarius Toney).
Reid hinted to reporters on Monday that the team could go heavy at receiver this year. But who exactly from the talented group of wideouts will make the 53-man roster? That's still an ongoing evaluation through this final preseason game on Saturday.
"Yeah, well I don't know that yet," Reid told reporters on which receivers will make the roster. "They're competing like crazy. You keep six or seven of those guys. That sixth and seventh spot is going to be a pretty good battle. We'll see how it all winds down there as we go. It's probably open for those spots."
Based on the team's depth chart, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, Justin Watson, and Richie James are safe. We can also assume that Rashee Rice will make it as a preseason standout and the team's second-round draft pick. Fans are anxious to see Justyn Ross make the 53-man roster, but Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Cornell Powell just might give him a run for his money. Nikko Remigio is another player that fans hope to see make it, but he's got a shoulder injury keeping him sidelined right now.
Ultimately, this position battle could all come down to how things go during this final practice week and the preseason finale at Arrowhead Stadium.
