Update: It’s officially a torn ACL for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided an injury update on star QB Patrick Mahomes after he suffered an apparent left knee injury in the Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mahomes suffered a knee injury late in the fourth quarter after Chargers DT DaShawn Hand tackled him on a first-down incomplete pass just after the two-minute warning. He was down on the field for a while before getting up under his own power and limping off the field. He was later spotted on the broadcast being helped down the tunnel with a towel over his head in a scene that admittedly didn’t look good. It was a brutal end to a game that was already littered with injuries for Kansas City.

Reid’s comments after the game raised concern that Mahomes could have a significant injury.

Mahomes is slated to have imaging done on his knee as soon as possible, according to Reid.

“As far as the injuries go, Patrick Mahomes hurt his left knee,” Reid said. “We’ll get an MRI tomorrow or this evening, whenever they get him in there.”

Reid also confirmed that Jaylon Moore suffered a left knee injury. Tyquan Thornton sustained a head injury on the hit that saw Chargers S Tony Jefferson ejected.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid fears the worst with QB Patrick Mahomes’ knee injury

Asked whether there was concern that Mahomes had suffered a significant injury, Reid’s face said it all. His words also said a whole lot about the situation.

“I don’t know,” Reid said. “But I mean, it didn’t look good. So you guys saw it. We’ll just see where it goes.”

No matter the outcome of the MRI results, I’d expect Mahomes to be shut down for the final three games of the season at this point. With playoff hopes officially lost, there’s no reason to put him out there behind an offensive line that is missing multiple starters due to injury.
