Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s latest injury updates open doors for several UDFAs to make their mark heading into preseason Week 2
The Kansas City Chiefs are dealing with some injuries that could open the door for several UDFAs to push for the 53-man roster.
The Kansas City Chiefs are dealing with a few different injuries after the preseason Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided some new updates on the team’s injury situation following Day 15 of training camp practices on Monday. He confirmed what we already knew after the game about Deon Bush, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. He also provided updates on several others who sustained injuries during or before the game.
“As far as the injuries go, (Jake) Briningstool didn’t practice today,” Reid began. “Hollywood (Brown) didn’t practice. Deon Bush had an Achilles tendon rupture; we’ll get that fixed. (Ethan) Driskell had the appendectomy. He got it fixed, so we’re doing good there. Janarius Robinson ended up having a foot fracture right on his little toe there. And then, Jaylen Watson has had a concussion. Other than that, everybody got out there and moved around.”
Some of the newer updates from Reid include Ethan Driskell, who was scratched from the preseason Week 1 game against the Cardinals. We now know that was due to the appendectomy. It opens up a door for a UDFA like OT Esa Pole, who had an outstanding performance against the Cards, to potentially jump Driskell on the depth chart and make the 53-man roster.
The news about Janarius Robinson was expected after the Chiefs signed UDFA DE Nate Matlack ahead of practice this morning. The injury to Bush could also open an opportunity for several UDFAs like Chris Roland-Wallace and Glendon Miller to make a case for the roster.
Reid also further elaborated on the injury to WR Hollywood Brown, who remains absent from practice with an ankle injury.
What’s going on with Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown?
Brown has been absent from practice since July 29 with some sort of ankle injury. Media members were thinking it might be a high ankle sprain based on the length of his absence, but Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed on Monday that it’s an entirely different type of ailment.
“Yeah, it’s not really high ankle sprain,” Reid explained. “It’s more ankle, foot area. He’s making great progress. So, he’s up and he’s running now a little bit, so that’s a positive. I don’t think he’s too far off, but we’ll see. Yeah, he’s doing good.”
The longer that Brown is out of training camp and preseason, the more opportunities for players like Tyquan Thornton and Jason Brownlee to work with the first-team offense. After last preseason, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see that the Chiefs are being cautious with Brown’s recovery to ensure that he’s ready when the meaningful games are being played. At the same time, the longer he’s out of practice, the less chemistry he can build with 2025 NFL season teammates.
