Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s latest comments on offensive coordinator Matt Nagy say a lot about his future with the team
Matt Nagy may be coaching his final two games as offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kansas City Chiefs OC Matt Nagy might not be with the organization in the 2026 NFL season, four years after rejoining Andy Reid’s coaching staff and after three years as the team’s offensive coordinator.
That won’t necessarily be because of a team decision, as it was recently reported that Nagy’s contract is slated to expire after the 2025 NFL season. It was also noted that he’s viewed as a strong candidate for the Tennessee Titans’ vacant coaching job. Asked about his contract situation on Tuesday, Nagy declined to comment on the report and his future with the club.
“Yeah, again, out of respect, I know it’s a fair question, but for me, I honestly want to just focus on right now,” Nagy said. “I know all that stuff will all take care of itself down the road. I have so much, just so much respect for our organization here from top down. And we’re at that point in time right now, especially not being in the playoffs, where stuff like that starts to come out. And I just, I really am focused with these guys, and want to help these guys out, and then all that stuff will take care of itself at the end here.”
What’s abundantly clear even before this statement was made: Nagy does, in fact, want the opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL again after his tenure with the Chicago Bears from 2018 through 2021.
It’s also clear that Nagy has supporters within the organization.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid is leading the charge on Matt Nagy’s NFL head-coaching reelection
Andy Reid has become known over the years for his loyalty to his coaching staff members, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he remains gung-ho on Matt Nagy despite the shortcomings of the 2025 NFL season. Asked about Nagy’s performance as offensive coordinator this season, Reid gave him a glowing review.
“Yeah, phenomenal,” Reid said. “I mean, we were on a record pace for a bit as far as statistically. So, he does a nice job there.”
He, of course, neglected to mention the fact that it’d be the team’s first season in which they failed to reach the playoffs since 2014. That responsibility falls solely on the head football coach, and if Reid has his way, that’s precisely where Nagy’s next stop will be. Asked about Nagy’s contract expiring after the season, Reid let us know exactly what he sees in the future for his current offensive coordinator.
“He deserves to be a head football coach in this league,” Reid said of Nagy. “So, that’s exciting for me.”
Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s offensive coordinator quick facts:
- Four coaches have held the offensive coordinator role in Kansas City since Reid took over in 2013.
- Doug Pederson (2013-2015)
- Brad Childress (Co-Offensive Coordinator with Nagy in 2016)
- Matt Nagy (2016, 2017, and 2023-2025)
- Eric Bieniemy (2018-2022)
It remains to be seen how things play out for the Chiefs’ coaching staff this offseason, but Nagy’s departure could be among the expected changes. His contract might be the convenient reason for the team to stage a split after a disappointing 2025 season. There could even be similar contract-related departures on the defensive side of the ball.
