The Kansas City Chiefs continue to find rookies that can help them out incredibly every single year. And, whether fans of other teams know this or not, the Chiefs need that every single year. They have played more games than any team in the league in the last five or six years when you factor in all of the playoff games and Super Bowl trips they have had.
So, they need that youth, those young guys with fresh legs, as do a lot of teams in the league. So it's not a surprise to the Chiefs when they have a rookie breakout every year. Last year it was Rashee Rice and Chamarri Conner. This year it's been Jaden Hicks, Xavier Worthy, and a few others here and there.
And down this stretch, we have seen Hicks play more and more and he's playing great, too. And, we may only see him start to play more, even as the postseason gets closer.
“He’s (Jaden Hicks) a good player and so him working in there I think is a positive," head coach Andy Reid said. "Again, he’s a young guy that he just keeps progressing and challenging himself that way. I know the coaches have trust in him and so we’ll just see how things go moving forward. He’s earned that right to play more and so he’s got the confidence of (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) Spags that way – and (Defensive Backs Coach) Dave (Merritt).”
Hicks has been great this year, so much so that sometimes you forget he is a rookie. The Chiefs truly got a steal in the fourth round with a guy from Washington State. And that's just what the Chiefs do every single year.
With the cornerback situation they currently have going on, whether it be Nazeeh Johnson or another player who simply isn't playing well enough, it also makes it easier for Spags to roll out those three safety packages he loves to roll out.
The Chiefs have themselves a dog, and when it is time for Hicks to be a starter, he will be ready. The Chiefs are set to take on the Los Angeles Chargers next, and after that, the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans.
