The Kansas City Chiefs do, in fact, have a backup quarterback controversy brewing.

In preseason Week 2, Chiefs HC Andy Reid made the bold decision to play Shane Buechele ahead of veteran Blaine Gabbert. Both quarterbacks have managed some impressive performances throughout the preseason, and now Reid has confirmed suspicions. The backup QB position is not yet settled.

“Those two are real close, they’re real close so they’re competing," Reid told reporters on Monday. "We’ll just let it play out here (and) see how it goes but it’s good competition.”

In his third year, Buechele appears to be as comfortable as ever in the offense. His head coach is certainly recognizing the progress that he's made since his rookie campaign, back when he was cut and landed on the practice squad before a promotion to the 53-man roster.

“Listen he’s familiar with the offense, he knows how we do things, he’s got a pretty good feel for the game just in general," Reid said of Buechele. "You can see the improvement he’s made from last year with his accuracy, throws, choices on his throws, he’s had a chance to look at these coverages and blitzes that these coordinators throw at you. So he’s got that part of it too.”

Given this new development, could we see both Buechele and Gabbert play in preseason Week 3? Typically, Reid sits Mahomes, and the backup QB, but he plays the third and fourth-string QBs. With the two quarterbacks being "real close" it suggests that they might each see extended playing time with a little slice of the game against the Browns reserved for Chris Oladokun as well.
