Chiefs HC Andy Reid tipped his hat to his team after they corrected their fatal flaw from Week 5 in the Week 6 win over the Lions
The Chiefs cleaned up their penalty problems in a big way.
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Detroit Lions 30-17 on Sunday night, marked by a distinct difference from the team’s Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
A week ago, on Monday night in Jacksonville, the Chiefs had a performance marred by penalties, with 13 penalties totaling 109 penalty yards. It was the most penalties they’ve had in a single game since 2018, in their 54-51 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. They did about everything else right in that game, winning the turnover battle and outgaining the Jaguars by 157 yards, but the penalties cost them.
“We obviously had 13 penalties to their four,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid told reporters after the Week 5 loss. “Whether I agree with them or don’t agree with them, it doesn’t matter. They called them. And so you have that many penalties. You give up field position, you can outstat them to death, but it doesn’t matter. It’s a score that matters, and we’ve got to take care of business there.”
Well, the Chiefs certainly cleaned up their penalty problems in Week 6 against the Lions. Technically, they had one penalty on the night, a late defensive offside on Chris Jones. However, it wasn’t accepted by Detroit and doesn’t appear on the stat sheet as a result. Kansas City otherwise didn’t have a single penalty in the game. In fact, it was a low-penalty night all around with Detroit being penalized just four times. The last time the Chiefs had no penalties in a game was on November 13, 2022, in Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Chiefs players made a conscious effort to correct the mistakes
After the team felt they let a winnable game slip away in Week 5 against the Jaguars, the group made a conscious effort to detail their work and play a clean game in Week 6 against the Lions. Andy Reid didn’t seem to expect a perfect night from his guys, but he also didn’t seem too surprised that it happened either.
“So, penalties are kind of a crazy thing,” Reid said after the Week 6 win over the Lions. “So, it’s sometimes they come in waves. So, I thought the officials did a nice job, but I thought our guys did a nice job of correcting some of those with a good, conscious effort to put forward there. So, yeah, it was a positive, though, really.”
The reality is the Chiefs had enough penalties against the Jags to last for two games, so things just kind of evened themselves out this week. In addition to not incurring penalties, the Chiefs didn’t turn the ball over outside of a failed fourth-down attempt. Hopefully, it’s the start of a trend for a team that has a bad habit of making things harder on itself with mistakes.
