The Kansas City Chiefs got some bad news at a position where they lack depth this week against the Houston Texans.
In the late-goings of the opening quarter of the Week 16 game, Chiefs LB Jack Cochrane was injured after a collision on a kickoff return. The training staff came out on the field and attended to Cochrane, checking out his left ankle. He was escorted off the field to the locker room, walking under his own power.
The team initially considered Cochrane questionable for return, but they quickly removed him from the game against the Texans, ruling him out during the second quarter.
Cochrane is not only the team's top backup linebacker but also an ace on special teams for Dave Toub's unit. He'll be missed most on special teams, but the injury also raises some concerning linebacker depth issues for Kansas City. He's the guy who Steve Spagnuolo trusts to wear the green dot and receive sideline communications off the bench.
Leo Chenal was questionable heading into this game with an illness. He's toughing it out, but he's not 100%. The Chiefs' only other depth linebacker is second-year man Cam Jones. The Chiefs have elevated UDFA LB Swayze Bozeman from the practice squad in each of the past two weeks, but they elevated S Deon Bush this week alongside TE Anthony Firkser. Earlier this season, the team opted for six linebackers on the roster, with now-practice squad LB Cole Christiansen on the active roster.
Hopefully, the Chiefs can get out of the game without taking another hit to their linebacker unit, which features Nick Bolton, Drue Tranquill, and Chenal.
