The Kansas City Chiefs are beneficiaries of a critical error by their Super Bowl LVIII opponent, the San Francisco 49ers.
According to multiple reports, the 49ers are being punished by the NFL for what's being described as an accounting error. The error caused a misreporting of the team's cumulative player compensation. While the league and San Francisco maintain the 49ers would have been under the salary cap, the league had to issue punishment for the error.
They'll lose their 2025 fifth-round pick entirely, but they're getting some unique punishment in 2024, too. Their 2024 fourth-round pick will now be moved to the end of the fourth round, behind the compensatory picks.
The 49ers issued the following statement:
“We take responsibility and accept the imposed discipline from the NFL due to a clerical payroll error. At no time did we mislead or otherwise deceive the League or gain a competitive advantage in connection with the payroll mistake.”
What does this have to do with the Chiefs?
The 49ers' fourth-round pick was originally set to be pick No. 131, ahead of the Chiefs' original fourth-round pick at pick No. 132. With the 49ers having their pick moved to pick No. 135 after the compensatory selections, the Chiefs will now pick at No. 131, moving up one draft slot in the fourth round. The Bills and Jets will also similarly benefit in 2024 with their fourth-round compensatory selections moving up a single slot.
In the grand scheme of things, it's pretty minor. However, when you consider the fact that Kansas City has faced San Francisco in the Super Bowl twice in the last five years, gaining any potential advantage over that NFC opponent is a plus. Who knows, this draft slot might get the Chiefs that much closer to their next fourth-round steal.
