The Kansas City Chiefs had quite a few players banged up heading into Week 1 of the regular season. As things currently stand, even the most important of those players have positive outlooks as the Chiefs turn their attention to the Detroit Lions.
In his meeting with media members on Wednesday afternoon, Chiefs GM Brett Veach had good news to convey regarding the injury situation. He explained that both WR Kadarius Toney and CB L'Jarius Sneed wouldn't be heading to injured reserve, despite missing most of training camp and the entire preseason.
“They will be on the 53 (man-roster)," Veach said. "Again, I don’t want to speak for the coaches or for (Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance) Rick (Burkholder), but they have a good chance to be where they need to be Week 1, we’ll see. I’ll let Rick make those decisions, him in conjunction with the players, they have a great relationship with all our players but especially those two (Kadarius Toney and L'Jarius Sneed)."
Veach had specific praise for Toney, Sneed, and Tershawn Wharton, who are all recovering from knee injuries. He also had credit for the athletic training staff for getting those players into a place where Week 1 isn't out of the question.
"Credit to Kadarius (Toney) and (L'Jarius Sneed) LJ and (Tershawn) Turk Wharton – really all of the guys," Veach said. "You think about Kadarius and LJ and Turk Wharton right off the bat, (I) just give them so much credit and Rick and (Assistant Athletic Trainer) Julie (Frymyer) and (Assistant Athletic Trainer David) Glove (Glover) and (Assistant Athletic Trainer) Evan (Craft), (Assistant Athletic Trainer) Tiff (Tiffany Morton) the whole staff down there, those guys have worked their tail off around the clock to put themselves in a position to play Thursday. I think they certainly have a chance, and we’ll see how it goes.”
We identified seven players who might be due for a short-term stay on injured reserve, but as things currently stand right now, the Chiefs do not plan to place anyone on the reserve list.
“As we sit here, I think we’re good," Veach told reporters. "All of this stuff can change, and again, I don’t want to speak for (Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance) Rick (Burkholder) or the coaches but I would say there’ll be no one that gets an injury designation within a day unless there’s a swap. I think these guys are good to go, doesn’t mean that they’re 100% and will be active gameday, but as we sit here, I think these guys will all be practicing this week. I think that’s probably a better way and it makes sense for you guys to hear that. These guys should be on the practice field.”
Things could change during the practice week if a player were to suffer a setback, but it sounds as if every player on the 53-man roster will practice in some capacity when preparation for the Lions intensifies.
