On Tuesday, while everyone was cutting their roster down from 90 to 53 players, the Kansas City Chiefs were making other moves.
With no new progress, as far as the public knows, on the Chris Jones holdout situation, it is becoming increasingly clear that the possibility of Jones not playing Week 1 against the Detroit Lions is huge.
After Patrick Mahomes he is the most important player on this team. Without him, the defense is a bottom-of-the-barrel unit. They can be a top-10 squad with Jones, as many people on the Chiefs have said this offseason.
"I think the most motivation [we have] is [we're] trying to get our defense into the top 10," Nick Bolton said earlier this offseason. "With the guys we got, the people we have, and guys kind of growing up and coming into their roles – there's no reason we can't do that."
"I'm with Nick. I'd like us to climb up there," Spagnuolo said. "I'm not going to worry about that week to week, but at the end of the year, I'd like that to be the ultimate goal."
With the uncertainty of Jones still looming over their heads, the Chiefs did something extremely smart. They bought low for something that could be high. On Tuesday, they traded for the Las Vegas Raiders 2022 draft pick Neil Farrell, a defensive tackle out of LSU.
Farrell is still very young and didn't get used a ton last season. The Raiders made several mistakes with him, and now the Chiefs will fix it as they do so often.
When I say bought low for something potentially high – Farrell was a fourth-round pick, and the Chiefs gave up a sixth-round pick to get him. I'm not saying Farrell will be great, but he definitely will help fill a need the Chiefs desperately have until Jones returns.
The Chiefs love what they see in him.
"Right off the bat, just a bigger body, that was one of the things we put an emphasis on," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told the media on Wednesday. He is 6' 4" and some change. He's just a bigger, longer body, and as you guys know, (Defensive Coordinator) Steve (Spagnuolo) likes that prototype, and we certainly do as well. (We) I liked him coming out of college."
Kansas City is currently trying to do the same thing with Kadarius Toney, a project they have had success with, but injuries are continuing to hinder the process. They have taken another higher-round player, paid less for him, and are attempting to fix or bring out what the original potential was.
I believe they can do that with Farrell, and the Chiefs obviously do, too.
