The offseason has kicked into full gear at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Kansas City Chiefs, a team with 20 unrestricted free agents, are set to enter a challenging period with many different needs to address. According to general manager Brett Veach, the team always focuses on one of the oldest platitudes in NFL roster building and talent evaluation: Building through the trenches.
"I think if you look at how we've handled the offseasons, whether it was a Joe Thuney or trading for Orlando Brown, or (Jawaan) Taylor, or Frank Clark, or Chris Jones," Veach began. "I mean, Mike Danna last year. I mean, we're always investing in the offensive and defensive lines. It's just some years, you have more numbers to work with than others. And I mean, that would probably be a similar challenge this year, and it's just coming up with some different unique plans. But I think our priority is always on the fronts first, and this will be no different."
Fans should expect additions and improvements on the offensive and defensive lines, not just the left tackle position. In fact, Veach made the team's top offseason priority clear in his meeting with media members on Tuesday. . .
Priority No. 1 for Chiefs? Re-sign pending free agent RG Trey Smith.
It shouldn't come as a shock to learn that Veach is emphasizing retaining their top pending free agent. Conversations are trending in the right direction to keep the interior offensive line intact by making a competitive long-term offer to starting RG Trey Smith.
"He's obviously at the top of the list," Veach said. "We've already had some good dialogue with him and with CAA (his agency). Obviously, there's a lot to work through, and this is the time of the year to do that. We've had some initial dialogue and that will continue on this week and the days coming on leading up to before free agency."
In his fireside chat with Chiefs media members, Veach added that the NFL's reported salary cap range for the 2025 NFL season took the team by surprise. The increased salary cap numbers for the upcoming season could be what helps them most when it comes to retaining Smith on a long-term deal.
"We'll obviously do what we can," Veach concluded. "And we feel pretty optimistic about our possibilities there."
