The Cleveland Browns aren't a team that will roll over and give you the win, especially not a team like the Kansas City Chiefs, who everyone wants a piece of after hoisting the Lombardi just six months ago. The Browns, just like every contending team, are trying to do the same.
Believe it or not, that starts in the preseason. The Chiefs play their starters in Week 2 of preseason to get their team ready, and sometimes Andy Reid will play a starter or two in Week 3. For the Browns, they plan on playing most of their starters.
"The starters will play," Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said earlier this week. "Similar to that Washington game, we will play the starters probably 20-25 plays. There are some guys that will hold out from the game as well."
This team isn't anything like they were in Week 1 of the 2021 season, which saw the Chiefs barely beating them then. In a way, they are much better and definitely more talented. Since the roster has had a lot of turnover, but somewhat in a good way, there are three certain players Chiefs fans and the team themselves need to watch for when the game kicks off at noon, Central Standard Time on Saturday.
3 Browns' players the Chiefs need to watch
Martin Emerson, CB – Emerson is not a name or a player that many people know outside of the Browns organization and fanbase; however, he had a stellar rookie season in 2022. The Browns used a third-round pick on Emerson in the 2022 NFL Draft and probably got a steal. After starting just six games in his rookie year, he will look to help bolster a great secondary in year two.
Last season, Emerson finished with a coverage grade of 75.1, according to Pro Football Focus, which was the best on his team of any secondary player. The Browns have some great corners and safeties, too. Emerson laced them up against Mike Evans last season, where he held him to zero catches on seven targets, just to give a feel for how good Emerson is. His film is great.
Ogbo Okoronkwo, EDGE – When you have a guy like Myles Garrett on your team, it's easy to forget all the other players you have that can get to the quarterback. Okoronkwo, a projected backup behind Garrett, put a ton of pressure on quarterbacks last season for the Houston Texans.
Okoronkwo finished 2022 with six sacks and 36 pressures, which is good for a guy who only rushed the passer 268 times. Now he is on a good team with a good defense. Watch for him to be extremely disruptive against a Chiefs backup offensive line. Okoronkwo wrapped up 2022 with a PFF pass-rush grade of 81.9.
Elijah Moore, WR – Moore is one of the Browns' newer additions after being disgruntled with the New York Jets last season. He is extremely talented, and since Stefanksi is playing their starters, we should see Moore in action. Better yet, we could also see him catching passes from Deshaun Watson.
Moore has elite speed and quickness and is a pretty big target, too, not because he is tall but because he is built very well. Moore and Amari Cooper will be a great duo, where Moore will provide speed and YAC ability, while Cooper brings the ability to run every route in the tree. The Chiefs, who have a young secondary, could see issues with Moore on Saturday.
The preseason is all about seeing guys you wouldn't normally see or players the casual fan may not know; however, in these circumstances, the Browns will be playing their starters. So, there should be some good football going on this weekend.
